Once a month, lovers of Latino art of all ages can enjoy free concerts, exhibitions, gallery tours, art making workshops, film screenings, and spoken word recitals at El Museo’s SUPER SABADO! Come join us for a full day of cultural expressions and the latest in Latino art.

VOCES Y VISIONES: Signs, Systems & the City in El Museo del Barrio’s Permanent Collection
On View December 18, 2010 - December 2011
Our new installation in the Carmen Ana Unanue Galleries, drawn from our Permanent Collection, features works with an urban sensibility that deploy pared-down building blocks of shape, color, and form to express revealing worldviews.

Family Tour
ARTEXPLORERS: Abstract forms, shapes, colors and movement of Carnaval
11:00am & 1:00pm, Las Galerías
Stroll through our Permanent Collection exhibition, VOCES Y VISIONES, as you engage in bilingual conversation with one of our artist-educators. The tour will be followed by an art-making activity in El Taller.  Space is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Meet us in the lobby!

Storytelling
COLORIN COLORADO... My Carnaval/Mi Carnaval
12:00pm & 2:00pm, El Café
Come learn about the exciting characters, traditions, and history of Dominican Republic's Carnaval with The Bilingual Birdies Band, who will bring Elisabeth Balaguer's storybook, My Carnival/Mi Carnaval to life through music.   In Collaboration with Bilingual Birdies

Photo Booth
SAY QUESOOOO! Comparsa
12:00noon – 4:00pm, El Café
Form a comparsa group with family and friends and capture the moment!  Your photo backdrop will showcase an original mural with characters from Dominican Carnaval, created by El Museo’s artist-educator Kathleena “Lady K Fever” Howie-Garcia. Once back home, you can view and share your photos online at Flickr.

Art Making Workshop
TOCO! TOCO! TOCO! VEJIGANTE COME COCO!
12:00pm – 4:00pm, El Taller
Design your own vejigante cape with colorful abstract shapes, lines, and forms inspired by artworks from El Museo’s Permanent Collection exhibition, VOCES Y VISIONES. Once ready, wear your cape and chant the traditional call and response: Toco! Toco! Toco! Vejigante como coco!

Concert
Afro-Caribbean Carnaval: The Legacy Circle, Alma Moyo & Kalunga
4:00pm - 5:00pm, El Teatro
Jump into Carnaval and get your spirits uplifted by the music and dance of Alma Moyo and The Legacy Circle as they celebrate the Afro Caribbean traditions of Carnaval. The performance kicks off with archetypal Puerto Rican Loiza Carnaval figures such as vejigantes, costumed knights, las locas, and los viejos followed by a Haitian Dominican dance, rara, by Kalunga Neg Mawon. A Q&A session with the artists immediately follows.

Spoken Word Workshop
OH, SNAP! Young Powerful Voices at Work
4:00pm - 6:00pm, El Taller
Leave your young siblings at home!  Come find your voice at this two-hour spoken word workshop for teens led by super-cool performance poet Caridad de la Luz “La Bruja.”
